A grapple having a central shaft with upper and lower ends. The upper ends of at least two and preferably three flukes are pivotally coupled to the shaft's upper end. A plurality of teeth are provided on each fluke's inward edge. A cap flange extends along and projects to either side of each fluke's outward edge. An inwardly extending protrusion is formed on the upper end of each cap flange, to substantially cover the upper end of the fluke bearing that flange. A first eyelet is fastened on the shaft's lower end to receive a throwing line. A second eyelet may be provided on shaft's upper end for use in conveniently transporting the grapple. The shaft, flukes and cap flange are formed of steel, and the shaft preferably has a solid core. This allows the grapple to remain compact, yet have sufficient weight for use by a tree climber.
