<p>Disclosed is a backlight system comprised of a light emitting portion (1) having a plurality of light sources which emit light having different dominant wavelengths, and an imaging optical system (3) containing a plurality of microlenses (3a) which concentrate the light emitted from the light emitting portion (1), wherein a liquid crystal panel is irradiated with the light passing through the imaging optical system (3). The liquid crystal panel contains a plurality of image elements which are pitched at a predetermined distance. Each image element contains a plurality of picture elements corresponding to different colors. If the arrangement pitch of the image elements is designated by P, and the magnification ratio of the imaging optical system (3) is designated by 1/n, the arrangement pitch (P1) of a light source (1) is represented by P1=n ? P, and the arrangement pitch (P2) of the microlenses (3a) is represented by P2=(n/(n+1)) x P.</p> |
