PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sound absorbing material which is applied to, for example, an automobile and the like and can absorb noise from the inside and outside of the automobile, and an adjusting method for adjusting the frequency band where sound is desired to be absorbed. SOLUTION: The sound absorbing material is prepared by dispersing capsule object 3 encapsulating granule substances 2 into a matrix material 4 and is formed with the space around the granule substances 2. The frequency band where sound is desired to be absorbed can be adjusted by adjusting the volume of the space, the quality of the material of the granule substances 2 and the ratio of the volume of the space and the volume of the granule substances 2 of the case the granule substances 2 do not exist.
