PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for processing flat products such as printed matter, permitting an accurate and simple division of a product flow into partial flows. SOLUTION: The apparatus has a first advancing mechanism F1 for advancing the flat products 3 into a product flow S. A separating means T functions to divide the product flow S into two partial flows S1, S2. The separating means T is provided with a plurality of containers 4 arranged in a longitudinally continuous manner so that each holds at least one flat product 3. The containers 4 are movable in a traverse direction to a conveying direction 11 and in the conveying direction 11 to form the partial flows S1, S2. The containers 4 are suitable to shift into a substantially horizontal state from a slanted or perpendicular state to a horizontal line after holding the flat products 3.
