Vinyl esters (MW greater than 100) are prepared from acetylene and a carboxylic acid, in the liquid phase at elevated temperature in the presence of a zinc or cadmium salt, in the presence of water to saturate the acetylene at 20 DEG C. and normal pressure when a straight chain carboxylic acid is used, and in the absence of water when a saturated aliphatic, 2-branched monocarboxylic acid is used. The process is continuous and the vinyl ester is removed at the rate the acetylene and carboxylic acid are fed in. Acids listed are caproic, caprylic, pelargonic, capric, lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, arachic, linoleic, linolenic, hydroxy stearic, monoesterified malonic or succinic acids and a -methyl and a -ethyl butyric, a : a -dimethyl butyric, a - methylvaleric, a - ethylvaleric, a - methyl, caproic and a -ethyl caproic acids and the mixtures of acids obtained by reacting saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbons containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule with formic acid or mixture of carbon monoxide and water. |
