A method for producing a high purity zinc oxide powder, characterized in that it comprises subjecting a raw material, such as a scrap containing Zn, to an acid leaching or an electrolytic extraction, followed by a solvent extraction and an activated carbon treatment, to thereby remove impurities, neutralizing the resultant solution freed of impurities with an alkaline solution, to form zinc hydroxide, and firing the zinc hydroxide into zinc oxide; a high purity zinc oxide powder produced by the method; a target produced by firing the high purity zinc oxide powder; and a thin film of the high purity zinc oxide powder being formed by the sputtering using the target. The method allows the production of a high purity zinc oxide powder freed of impurities, in particular, C, Cl, S and Pb impurities, with good efficiency at a low cost.
