The disclosed method of assisting the driver to park a vehicle, starts with the sensors of the system measuring the discovered parking space and checking that the space is suitable to use from the sensors' measurements. The system then calculates an optimum initial lining-up or starting position with a preset area. The position of the initial lining-up area is output to the driver. The initial area may include an optimum orientation. The system may signal when the initial area is reached. The method may ascertain the instantaneous position of the vehicle in relation to the calculated initial lining-up area and show the position on the driver's output device. The method may calculate and output a path from the vehicle's present position to the initial lining-up area. The travel path may include a shunting run ie forwards and reverse changes of direction. The output may include voice instructions and/or a screen for graphic information. The system may, if there is a smaller shunting space to manoeuvre in, choose a starting area closer to the parking space. |
