PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coater and a coating method permitting coating with an even coating thickness in the transverse direction even in coating with a film thickness of an wide and thin coating film using a coater based on a reverse roll coater system. SOLUTION: The coater consists of a transfer roll 2, a means of supplying a coating solution onto the transfer roll and a metering roll 3 arranged with a clearance between the transfer roll and metering roll 3. The coating solution supplied onto the transfer roll with the supplying means is metered while made to pass through the clearance, and the metered coating solution is applied to the surface of a sheet-like substrate 5. The coater has bending means D(1) and D(2) bending at least one of the metering and the transfer roll, and the bending means is so constructed as to impart a bending force in the plane perpendicular to the axial line of the metering or the transfer roll, in two or more directions.
