In one aspect, the present invention provides a novel method for inducing differentiation of stem cells, and provides differentiated cells obtained by the method. In another aspect the present invention provides method for stabilizing the phenotype of isolated primary cells in vitro. In both methods of the present invention, a central role is played by histone deacetylase inhibitors.
