PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a PDP surely selecting light emitting section in spite of its three electrode AC-type structure applying opposed discharge between parallel electrodes. SOLUTION: A mutual space between a scanning electrode 52s and a writing electrode 28 separated from each other by a barrier rib 22 is made smaller than an electrode space to minimize a discharge starting voltage, but by the above, a discharge distance to minimize the discharge starting voltage in a discharge direction slanting against a writing electrode surface 54 is secured. Since such a discharge distance is kept not only between a scanning electrode lower face 58 and the writing electrode, but also between an opposed discharge face 56 and the writing electrode when a voltage for a writing discharge is impressed between the scanning electrode 52s and the writing electrode 28, the writing discharge is applied between the opposed discharge face 56 and the writing electrode, and quantity of wall electric charge on the opposed discharge face 56 is adjusted.
