<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display apparatus having a constitution of cooling a light valve, and capable of preventing the deterioration of the durability by suppressing such a failure that the light valve is excessively cooled when the shutter device is closed. <P>SOLUTION: The shutter device 21 can switches between a shielded state (referred to as the closed state of the shutter device) and a passing state (referred to as the open state of the shutter device) of illuminating light emitted from the lamp of an illuminating apparatus 1. When a system control circuit 40 receives information that the shutter device 21 is in the closed state from a detection part 47, instructions to reduce the rotating speed of a fan is given to a panel fan power source 45.
