The invention concerns recyclable optical discs, method for production thereof, and a new use of paper or cardboard sheets. The discs comprise a substrate (48) having two opposite surfaces, a planar polymeric coating layer (46) on at least one of the surfaces, and a high-resolution pattern formed in the polymeric coating layer (46). According to the invention, the substrate (48) comprises a coated paper or cardboard sheet (42, 44) having a bending stiffness (ISO 2493) of 3,0 mNm or more in the machine direction and 2,0 mNm or more in the cross direction. The resulting discs may serve as an environmentally friendly and inexpensive media for limited or unlimited time storage of data.
