PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct methanol type fuel cell (DMFC) having a high output density. SOLUTION: The direct methanol type fuel cell comprises a power generating element 100 including a positive electrode 1 containing a positive electrode catalyst layer 1a for reducing oxygen, a negative electrode containing a negative electrode catalyst layer 2a for oxidizing methanol, and a solid electrolyte membrane 3, arranged between the positive electrode catalyst layer 1a and the negative electrode catalyst layer 2a. The power generating element 100 includes an oxidation layer 4, arranged between the solid electrolyte membrane 3 and the positive electrode catalyst layer 2a, and the oxidation layer 4 contains a composite material, in which the catalyst for oxidizing the methanol is carried by an electron insulating material and a proton conductive material, and has a porous structure.
