Apparatus has a fuel cell with a cathode region separated from an anode region (14) by an electrolyte. Catalytic converters (20, 22) in the regions catalytically convert a reactant supplied to the cell. Catalytic converters (58a, 58b) in an inlet and an outlet of the region (14) are placed in the direction of region (14) to catalytically convert diffused hydrogen if the cell is turned-off and the region (14) is filled with air/oxygen. An independent claim is also included for a method for turning-off a fuel cell system.
