PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control thrust and speed of a cutting tool according to a characteristic of land to be excavated. SOLUTION: A machine 10 for excavating a trench 21 and forming a wall, having a rear part 12 and a front part 16 in relation to its advancing direction, comprises excavation means 54, 56, 59 arranged at the front part 16 to regulate a vertical cutting front line 55, wall forming means 19, 22 arranged at the rear part 12 and a thrusting means 22 for advancing the machine along the course. The machine 10 further comprises a center part 14, brake means 30, 36 which are controllable to delay advancing of at least a part of the machine 10, and a controllable connecting/disconnecting means for replacing the kinds of the excavation means 54, 56, 59 and the kinds of the wall forming means 19, 22 by connecting and disconnecting the center part 14 to/from the front part 16 and the rear part 12, respectively.
