PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To facilitate writing of a record to a vertical magnetic recording medium with high coercive force which is more difficult to write compared with intra-plane magnetic recording. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording medium is provided with a substrate and a magnetic recording layer formed on the substrate and having a data area including magnetic layer pattern divided by grooves and used as a recording track and a servo area including a magnetic layer pattern used as an address bit. In a discrete track medium, the magnetic layer pattern has a taper with the angle of 30 to 80°with respect to a plane perpendicular to the axis of crystal anisotropy of the magnetic layer.
