The engine has an exhaust gas discharge device (10) that is opened in starting operation mode. A shifting device (22) shifts a cylinder (1) based on a crank angle of a crankshaft (4) that is phase shifted from the starting mode to an injecting operation mode, where the angle is assigned to a piston of the cylinder. The shifting takes place before the piston passes a position so that the discharge device closes in the injecting mode.
