PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving a solid state imaging device by which high dynamic reading can be performed and an information volume can be reduced by reducing the number of pixels. SOLUTION: Out of two groups 71, 72 which are adjacent in a transfer direction, the main signal charge of a pixel 21 in one group 71 is read out to a transfer part 20, the main signal charge is transferred up to a transfer part 20 corresponding to a pixel 25 of the other group 72 and the main signal charge of the pixel 25 of the other group 72 is read out to the transfer part 20 and added to the main signal charge. Then after the lapse of a prescribed exposure time, a sub-signal charge of the pixel 21 of one group 71 is read out to the transfer part 20, the sub-signal charge is transferred up to the transfer part 20 corresponding to the pixel 25 of the other group 72 and the sub-signal charge of the pixel 25 of the other group 72 is read out to the transfer part 20 and added to the sub-signal charge.
