The system enables monitoring of errors and hence location of faults on network. The system provides surveillance of the loss of data packets on a network (10) which is carrying digital information in asynchronous transfer mode. When the loss of a packet is detected in at least one node (12,14,16,18,20,22) of the network, a signaling packet is generated for each lost packet. This signaling packet is transmitted using the same data channels as those used by the lost packet. The signaling packet comprises an indicator signaling its nature and the nature of the lost data packet, within its header. The system limits the additional data which is transmitted, in order to measure the rate of data packet loss occurring. |
