The present invention addresses the drawbacks associated with conventional semaphore lamps and, at its most general, proposes that a paraffin burner can be replaced with a single light source such as an LED that provides the necessary light output in the forward direction and a reflecting element to provide light output in the rearward direction. In a first aspect, the present invention provides a signal device including a light source arranged to provide a first light output in a first direction, and light directing means for directing at least some of the light from the light source so as to provide a second light output in a second direction, which second direction is different from the first direction. Suitably the light source is an electrically powered lightsource. |
