PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-based resin dispersion for paper processing, good in stability when undergoing polymerization, excellent in mechanical stability, chemical stability, storage stability, film formability and solvent resistance, and also excellent in printability, especially for water-based ink, when used as a paper processing agent, especially as a binder resin for construction material paper. SOLUTION: The water-based resin dispersion is obtained by emulsion copolymerization in an aqueous medium between 15-25 pts.wt. of (A) a cyano-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer, 5-30 pts.wt. of (B) styrene, 5-15 pts.wt. of (C) an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic hydroxyalkyl ester, 2-8 pts.wt. of (D) an amido-containing ethylenically unsaturated monomer and 22-73 pts.wt. of (E) another ethylenically unsaturated monomer.
