PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a user to maintain recorded information without performing particularly intensive operation even if an unexpected situation occurs. SOLUTION: A control section 2 of an information recording and reproducing apparatus 1 uses a wired/wireless network interface 5 to back up recorded information in a storage area on a storage device built in or connected to a terminal device on a network. At such a time, UPnP is used as a protocol therefor. Furthermore, information to be stored as backup is re-encoded using MPEG-4, MPEG-1, H.264 or WMV scheme. If vacant capacitance in the storage area for backup is lacked, erasure of information stored in the storage area is started from information stored earliest in the past or information stored in the storage area as backup is erased at the interval of a predetermined period.
