<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a desired-sized projection pixel image in a projection image display apparatus having a pixel reducing means and a pixel shifting means. <P>SOLUTION: The optical path of illuminating light emitted from a lamp light source 31 is separated by a color separation filter 35, and deflected by a mirror 36. Thereafter, the light is converted to linearly polarized light by a half-wave plate 40, then, made incident on a polarized beam splitter 41. A sign 42 shows an element where a reflection type light valve element and an image reducing element are unified. The illuminating light separated into RGB by the color separation filters 35 and 39 are color-synthesized by a cross prism 44, then, comes to a non-illustrated projection screen through the pixel shifting elements 46 and 47 and an enlargement/projection optical system 48.
