PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect existence of a misfire in a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine in both of BTDC section and ATDC section without calculation. SOLUTION: ECU 3 determines a combustion condition based on a characteristic line defined by a predetermined relational expression which gas under an adiabatic condition satisfying PVκ= constant follows in a space expressed by pressure and volume, here pressure in a combustion chamber 601 is defined as P, volume is defined as V and specific heat ratio of specific heat at constant pressure and specific heat at constant volume is defined asκ, and a relation of a position of a point in the space corresponding detected pressure and volume.
