The device has a chamber (4) opened downward in a plate to receive liquid (2) and designed in such a manner that a curved liquid surface area is formed. A lens (19) detects the intensity of the light reflected by a lower surface of the liquid and/or the light transmitted through the liquid. A determining device (12) is provided for computational determination of the distribution of the intensity of the reflected or transmitted light. An independent claim is also included for a method for determining surface tension of a liquid.
