The front panel of an item of domestic equipment, e.g. washing machine, has a number of manual inputs [3-9] that are used to select and activate the programme. The inputs are received by a built in controller and have a second mode of operation. The second mode is used to enter an access code. Only when this code is entered can the machine system be activated.
