PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inkjet recording apparatus and a liquid application method for forming preferable images on recording media of various types, by controlling liquid application in accordance with the permeation speed of the ink. SOLUTION: The inkjet recording apparatus 10 forms a desired image by mixing a processing liquid applied onto a recording sheet 16 by a processing liquid application unit 11 on the recording sheet 16 regardless of the image and the ink ejected from a printing head in accordance with the image. In the inkjet recording apparatus 10, in accordance with the permeation speed of the processing liquid which is applied first onto the recording sheet 16, the application amount of the processing liquid is changed such that the processing liquid that can be mixed to react with the ink remains on the surface of the recording sheet 16 when the ink is ejected. Instead of changing the application amount of the processing liquid, the transporting speed of the recording sheet 16, the temperature of the recording sheet 16 can be controlled. When the application amount of the processing liquid is changed, image processing is performed in order to prevent insufficient toning of the image, and the amount of the ink ejected from the printing head is also changed.
