A method for pressing granular material, e.g. sand and/or gravel, into the subsoil at the bottom of a bore has the bore defined by a pipe (3) positioned vertically or at an angle and provided with a ram element comprising a periodically expanding and contracting element (5, 6) positioned near to the bottom of the pipe. The ram element forces the granular matter into the soil around the bottom of the pipe and generates voids for back filling with more sand and/or gravel. No cement or clay is required to compact the soil. Suitable ram elements include cylinders and pistons and expanding elastic elements.
