<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a high-contrast image by making an aperture rate high by omitting a black mask and eliminating a light leak in an area between pixels. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display element includes a reflecting means 16 for sectioning a plurality of pixels A into a reflective display part A1 and a transmissive display part A2 on an internal surface of a substrate 3 on the opposite side from an observation side and has a liquid crystal cell 1 which has a liquid crystal layer 24 made of a liquid crystal material with negative dielectric anisotropy where liquid crystal molecules 24a are vertically aligned and does not have a black mask corresponding to areas between respective pixel rows and pixel columns; and a couple of polarizing plates 25 and 26 are arranged across the liquid crystal cell 1 while having their axes of transmission substantially orthogonalized to each other and λ/4 plates 27 and 28 are arranged between the liquid crystal cell 1 and the couple of polarizing plates 25 and 25, thereby making display black when the liquid crystal molecules are aligned substantially perpendicular to the substrate surface. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
