<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle recognition device and method for highly precisely recognizing a preceding vehicle from among images ahead of its own vehicle photographed by a camera. <P>SOLUTION: This vehicle recognition method comprises an image extraction process to extract the image of a specific region in an image with the location of an object included in detection information from a radar as a center, a binarization process (S20) for binarizing an image extracted by the image extraction process, a matching process (S24) for executing the pattern matching of an in-image graphic included in the binarized image and a predetermined graphic for collation and a decision process (S25) for deciding that the in-image graphic of the matching object is the graphic of a preceding vehicle when the matching result of the matching process is coincident or coincident at a predetermined rate or more.
