PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a burner ignition system and an ignition control method whereby certain ignition is performed upon searching the proper air-fuel ratio. SOLUTION: The burner ignition system and ignition control method comprise a blower 24 to feed the air into a burner 3, a flow control valve 23 to adjust the feeding of a fuel for combustion into the burner, and a controller 21 for controlling the blower etc., in which ignition is conducted by feeding the air and the fuel for combustion into the space where a plug generates sparks, wherein the controller 21 regulates the opening of the flow control valve 23 so that the fuel for combustion is fed to the burner at a constant rate of flow at the time of ignition, and the operating condition of the blower 24 to send out the air in the specified rate of flow to suite the ignition for the determined rate of fuel flow is stored in advance as the reference state, and the blower 24 is operated within the specified operating width so that the rate of air flow changes including the value of the rate of flow of the air sent out in the reference ignition condition.
