PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber allowing smooth opening/closing operation of a damping valve, with excellent responsiveness, improving degree of freedom of the operation while ensuring sealing performance, and eliminating generation of disturbance of damping force. SOLUTION: In the hydraulic shock absorber with a piston rod movably inserted in a cylinder through a piston which partitions two fluid chambers in the cylinder, wherein the two fluid chambers communicate with each other through a port provided on the piston, and wherein the damping valve energized in a closing direction with a spring is provided at an outlet end of the port so as to be opened/closed, vertical clearance is formed on an inner peripheral side of the damping valve, and the damping valve is held on an outer peripheral side of the piston rod through an annular elastic body for cutting off the clearance.
