PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an excellent airtight container which retains an airtight state in a good condition, regardless of precision in dimension between a container body proper and a lid body, and whose airtight state, furthermore, is not affected even by a change in the inner pressure, etc., while allowing the making of smooth movements of opening and closing. SOLUTION: The airtight container is provided with the container body proper 1, the lid body 5 that closes the upper opening of the container body proper 1, and an elastic annular gland packing 20. The lid body 5 is so arranged that it has a ceiling plate portion and a periphery wall portion 22 that hangs vertically down from the ceiling plate portion enclosing the rim portion of the opening of the cosmetics encasing portion 2 of the container body proper 1, while the elastic annular gland packing 20 has its lower surface in the vicinity of its inner rim portion pressed for contact against the rim portion of the upper opening of the container body proper 1, thus the lid body 5, under a closed state, keeps the rim portion of the upper opening of the container body proper 1 airtight by the pressurized contact against it of the elastic annular gland packing 20, while, at the time of opening operation of the lid body 5, the elastic annular gland packing 20 presses the container body proper 1 downward so as to decrease the airtightness within the upper opening.
