PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type display device having good color reproducibility to human visual sensation. SOLUTION: The light from a light source is polarized by a polarizing optical system and is then color separated to four colors, blue, emerald, green, and red by a color separation optical system. Each color light subjected to the color separation is made incident on light valves and is modulated by the color signal of each color. Only the modulated light is analyzed by a detection optical system from each modulated color light and after the color light of the four colors is color composited by a color composition optical system, the composited light is projected by a projection lens. Since the light is color separated to four colors and is modulated by the color signal of each color light, the projected image of the excellent color reproducibility can be projected.
