A DIGITAL PEN

A digital pen suitable for use in a digital pen and paper system has a writing stylus adapted to write handwritten markings onto a surface and is adapted to capture those handwritten markings digitally. The pen further includes at least one switch which alters the operating mode of the pen such that a first context is applied to the information captured by the pen in a first mode which differs from a context applied to the information when the pen is in a second, different, mode of operation. The context applied in one mode is preferably an indication that a user is marking special symbols which represent annotations or other functions that are to be applied to regions of the document.
