The badge comprises a flat base part(2) and an information symbol or emblem(8) with an pronounced three-dimensional appearance. The symbol is completely covered on the visible side(4) by the base part. On the rear, non-visible side(5) the symbol has a flat surface while on the visible side it projects from the plane of the flat base part. Paint or varnish is applied to the rear side(5) of the flat base part(2). Base parts can be either a plastic film, a metal foil or a laminate. Printing over the symbol with a different, preferably metallic, color from the flat base and rear face coating enhances appearance. Symbols are of a formable material, in particular plastic or metal and have a flat surface on one side and an arched surface on the other after forming. The visible side(4) of the base part is completely covered by transparent plastic(10) which may form an arched surface. The plastic may alternatively have a flat surface in which the raised contors of the symbol(8) do not stand out. An independent claim is included for a method for manufacturing the ornamental badge or mask which involves: a) printing, preferably by screen printing, a flat base part(2) with a color filled outline to enhance the intended symbol; positioning a former(7) behind the printed outline; c) pressing the former into the flat base until a flat rear face(5) is created in the former; d) coating the visible and/or rear side of the formed object with transparent plastic, e.g. by injection molding.
