The vehicle headlamp has at least one semiconductor light source (5a,5b,6a,6b) and a control unit (10,11) for the light source. The control unit includes a modulation unit (7,8) arranged to control the light source such that it, at a given modulation frequency, particularly with a given signal pattern, outputs modulated electromagnetic waves. Independent claims also cover a headlamp system including distance measuring circuitry and a method of operating the headlamp.
