摘要 A synthetic ester lubricant comprises an ester composition made by esterifying in one or more stages (a) either (i) a monohydric alcohol or a mixture of such alcohols or (ii) an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or mixture of such acids, (b) an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or mixture of such acids, and (c) a mixture of neopentyl glycol and polyethylene glycol 200. The ratio of components (a): (b): (c) is preferably 2-10: 2: 0,5-5. It is preferred that the mixture of diols does not contain more than 90% of either component on a molar basis. The preferred esters are those in which component (a) is a monohydric alcohol having 8-13 carbon atoms, e.g. 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol, 2-ethylhexanol, iso-octanol or iso-tridecanol, or a mixture of such alcohols and component (b) is one or more of the acids azelaic, sebacic and adipic acid. The nature and amount of the reactants are preferably such that the product has a viscosity in the range 3-15 centistokes at 210 DEG F. The components may be heated together in the presence of NaHSO4 and benzene, a steady reflux of benzene being maintained until reaction is complete.ALSO:A complex ester is prepared by esterifying in one or more stages (a) either (i) a monohydric alcohol or a mixture of such alcohols or (ii) an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid or mixture of such acids, (b) an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or mixture of such acids, and (c) a mixture of neopentyl glycol and polyethylene glycol 200. The ratio of components (a) : (b) : (c) is preferably 2-10 : 2 : 0.5-5, more preferably 2.2-10 : 2 : 1-2. It is preferred that the mixture of diols does not contain more than 90% of either component on a molar basis. The preferred esters are those in which component (a) is a monohydric alcohol having 8-13 carbon atoms, e.g. 3,5,5-trimethylhexanol, 2-ethylhexanol, isooctanol or isotridecanol, or a mixture of such alcohols, and component (b) is one or more of the acids azelaic, sebacic and adipic acid.
