The microscope has a microscope stage assembly (26) with an object holder and mounted on a frame. An x-y control (40) has a knob to move the holder in x direction parallel to shoulders of an operating microscopist. The control has another knob to move the holder in y direction perpendicular to the x direction. Coarse and fine focus knobs (36, 38) move the holder in z direction to move an object in an optical path.
