PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copper-based sliding material causing neither burning nor peeling even under severe service conditions, e.g., hydraulic machinery and construction machinery, as compared with conventional Cu-Sn-Bi type copper-based sliding materials. SOLUTION: The copper-based sliding material has a composition consisting of, by mass, 2 to 20% Bi, >10 to 25% Sn and the balance Cu, and its matrix consisting of Cu and Sn is uniformly dotted with Bi. The copper-based sliding material can be manufactured by uniformly mixing first alloy powder composed of a Cu-Sn alloy and second alloy powder composed of Sn-Bi alloy powder into the prescribed composition, scattering the resultant powder mixture on a steel plate and then carrying out sintering.
