<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To change quantity of heat that engine cooling water must absorb by an EGR cooler and temperature of exhaust gas after passing through a turbocharger. <P>SOLUTION: This EGR system of the engine is provided with the EGR cooler 16 cooling second exhaust gas of the engine 1 having the turbocharger 6 driven by first exhaust gas by engine cooling water and absorbing again and a heat exchange means 15 for heat-exchanging the second exhaust gas before passing through the EGR cooler and the first exhaust gas after passing through the turbocharger. Preferably, this system is provided with control means 11, 12, 27 for controlling operation of the heat exchange means, a first temperature detection means 19 for detecting temperature of the first exhaust gas after passing through the turbocharger, and a second temperature detection means 20 for detecting temperature of the second exhaust gas before passing through the heat exchange means.
