PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyimide-based orienting agent varnish capable of forming an alignment layer having especially high uniaxial alignment, to provide the alignment layer formed by using the varnish, and to provide a liquid crystal display element with the alignment layer, having good black displaying characteristics. SOLUTION: This polyimide-based varnish is used for forming the alignment layer for the liquid crystal display element, wherein the varnish forms the alignment layer having an alignment index (Δ) of≥1.3 which is expressed by formula (1) [a forefront term of an denominator and a numerator in formula (1) is an absorbance due to C-N stretching vibration of an imide ring, measured by making infrared light having a polarization component parallel to the direction of alignment treatment incident on the alignment layer; A⊥is an absorbance due to the C-N stretching vibration of the imide ring, measured by making infrared light having a polarization component perpendicular to the direction of the alignment treatment incident on the alignment layer; and d is a thickness (nm) of the alignment layer] and measured after liquid crystal treatment.
