PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aqueous polymer dispersion by seed polymerization, whereby the aqueous polymer dispersion excellent in dispersion stability and the like can be produced while suppressing bad influence of a water-soluble polymer produced as a by-product in a seed polymer formation process. SOLUTION: In the method for producing an aqueous dispersion of an anionic polymer, an anionic unsaturated monomer (A) and a hydrophobic unsaturated monomer (C) copolymerizable with monomer (A) are subjected to radical polymerization in an aqueous medium. The method comprises (1) the step of polymerizing a monomer component which is a part of the whole monomer component to be used and essentially contains monomer (A), in the presence of a specific compound (X), to form a seed polymer and (2) the step of adding a monomer component which is the remainder of the whole monomer component and essentially contains monomer (C), to the aqueous medium containing the above-formed seed polymer to conduct polymerization.
