A nasal cannula (58) for collection of exhaled gases from a patient having nostrils (62) comprises two nasal prongs (60) for insertion into the nostrils of the patient and a collection tube (66) for the collection of the exhaled gases from the patient. The nasal prongs (60) and the collection tube (66) are connected at a single junction (68) such that the exhaled gases flow freely from said nasal prongs to the collection tube.
