A scintillator composition comprises terbium or lutetium-containing composition of specified formula. Scintillator composition comprises (Tb (1 - y)Ce y) aD zO 1 2, (Lu (1 - y)Ce y) aD zO 1 2, or (G (1 - x - y)A xRE y) aD zO 1 2 composition prior to annealing. A : rare earth metal from Y, La, Gd, Lu, or Yb; D : metal from Al, Ga, or In; G : Th, Lu, Y, La, Gd, or Yb; RE : rare earth metal from Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Dy, Ho, Er, or Tm; a : 2.8-3.1; x : 0-0.5; y : 0.0005-0.2;and z : 4-5.1. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a method for preparing a terbium or lutetium containing garnet scintillator comprising annealing a garnet scintillator in a controlled atmosphere having predetermined amount of oxygen for a predetermined time and temperature; and (b) a scintillator comprising garnet scintillator capable of emitting visible light in response to excitation through high-energy radiation having X, beta , or gamma radiation. The annealed scintillator comprises a smaller radiation-induced change in efficiency of signal generation than a same scintillator not treated with annealing. It comprises metal from terbium or lutetium. It is activated with rare earth element from cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, or thulium. |
