The illumination system uses flexible light conductors (4) or electrical lighting devices incorporated in the flexible textile material forming the roof (2) of the automobile, for indirect lighting of the passenger compartment, the light source (3) for the light conductors or the current source for the electrical lighting devices attached to a rigid part of the automobile body. The flexible light conductors can be provided by a number of individual light conductors spaced across the surface of the roof.
