PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multilayer-coated color steel sheet production method and apparatus, wherein while a steel sheet is continuously coated a plurality of times, its surface can be simply and easily inspected, and when defects are detected, information on the defects is reflected on the steel sheet. SOLUTION: A steel sheet is subjected to pretreatment before coating, the steel sheet is subjected to a surface inspection with a plurality of inspection devices set downstream of the pretreatment before coating while the transfer of the steel sheet is tracked. When the inspection results reveal defects on the surface of the steel sheets, the inspection devices judge the types and extents of the defects, and judge the positions of the defects on the steel sheet from the tracking information and output the information.
