A method for the purification of polyalkylene glycols (I) obtained by addition of alkylene oxides to alkylene glycols involves treating the crude product at pH above 7 with a bleaching agent selected from organic and inorganic peroxides, per-acids, percarbonates, perborates, persulfates and oxygen, in each case with the optional addition of a bleach activator. An independent claim is also included for pharmaceutically-active compounds, foods or food supplements containing (I) purified by the above method.
