PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an EL display device using the pulse number modulation and built in a configuration of driving a dot matrix EL display which uses capacitive EL elements for the pixels by a field reverse system. SOLUTION: The control circuit controls gradation display, by alternately reversing the polarities of the resultant voltage of the scanning voltage applied across the EL elements and the data voltage, using a set of the continuous odd number of images as a gradation display unit; and reversing the polarity of the resultant voltage each time the EL element emits light.
