A machine for planting-out plants, e.g. seedlings or cuttings, in pots comprises means for introducing a soil mixture in selectable quantities into the pots, means for vibrating the plants and the pots to shake down the soil mixture without any relative movement between the plants and the pots and means for keeping the plants rigid relative to the pots. As illustrated the machine comprises a hopper 3, including an. agitor 4, having openings cooperating with recesses 9, 9a in rotary distributors 6, 6a, shoots 12a and a vibrating table 22. Initially a seedling is manually place in a pot e.g. made of peat and vegetable fibres received in a holder 21 and is clamped by arms 15, 15a fastened by members 26. A unit of four pot holders is moved on to the table beneath one of the distributers which is then rotated through 180 degrees to allow the soil mixture to pass into the pots. The mixture is compacted by the vibrations of the table. The machine may have only one distributor.
